I Love Thursdays

Every Thursday the RGV Shooters Organization has a IDPA shoot.  It is tons of fun.  We got a surprise this week when there was a Turkey Shoot with a banquet at some other part of town.  If I had payed my dues to join the club I would have gotten a text message.  But, blush, I have not.  Yet.  I will.  Tomorrow.

Three of us nerds showed and, after we realized we were out of what the in crowd was doing, took the opportunity to practice to kick their asses next week after they had been winning and dinning with turkeys.  This is the super cool part about local shooting clubs, people love to teach.

A wonderful dentist spent two hours helping us newbies practice shooting around barrels.  That is one of the tough parts of shooting.  Cover (the barrels) requires that you shoot fast and aim fast.  It also challenges your eyes when you have to shoot from the left.  Most people are right eye dominant so shooting left from cover is a challenge.  I have an advantage.

I was born with crossed eyes and spent years in eye therapy trying to get the eyes to work together.  Never happened.  I suspect that is one reason I am a good shooter.  I have no depth perception.  Everything looks just as close.  Tonight I found out that both my eyes are dominant.  Shooting from the left is nooooo problemo!

The other skill we practiced was ejecting your magazine.  One hand ejects the magazine while the other grabs the full magazine, sliding it into the butt of the gun and then, like a ballet, orchestrating both hands into the shooting position.  This is very much like patting your head and rubbing your tummy.  It ain't easy.

Here is the other thing for divas.  Clothes.  For those of you who sew, the cover for a tournament, the jacket or vest that is required to cover your gun, is really important.  Dentist had just purchased a vest for $75 that was stiff, just covered the gun legally, but was no problem to pull back and keep back.  I'm pulling out the sewing machine to make some gun friendly clothes. (And a bit more fashionable.)

May be a great new business.
